A Violet man died Saturday night when he was partially thrown from the car he was riding in after it struck a house on La. 39 in St. Bernard Parish.
A 2010 Chevrolet Camaro driven by Samuel Hampton Jr., 38, of Violet, was traveling fast and heading north on La. 39 at about 10:30 p.m. when it ran off the road and into a ditch, Trooper First Class Melissa Matey said.
The Camaro overturned and struck a house, causing a passenger, Victor Major, 46, who was not wearing a seat belt to be partially ejected.
Major was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hampton and the three children, ages 4, 10 and 11, who were riding in the back seat, were all wearing seat belts and suffered moderate injuries. They were transported to the Interim LSU Public Hospital in New Orleans.
Troopers said they believe Hampton was impaired and have submitted blood samples to the State Police Crime Lab for toxicology analysis.
The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending against Hampton.
