The eastbound lanes of Lakeshore Drive between Pratt Drive and the entrance to the University of New Orleans will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers begins work on the permanent canal closures and pump station at the Orleans Avenue canal. Both westbound lanes will remain open, with one dedicated to traffic heading east.
The permanent canal closures and pumps are part of the massive effort to rebuild the levee system surrounding New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. The structure will provide a more sustainable way to reduce the risk of a 100-year level storm surge entering the 17th Street, Orleans Avenue and London Avenue canals. Pre-construction activities are underway at all three canals and major construction will begin in the fall.
