Around Jefferson: Booster seat giveaway is Saturday at Clearview Mall

State Police Troop B and the Interim LSU Hospital Level One Trauma Center will sponsor a booster seat giveaway from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Clearview Shopping Center, 4436 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie.

Held in conjunction with the Louisiana Passenger Safety Task Force, free booster seats will be given to families with children who weigh between 40 to 100 pounds and are between 40 to 57 inches tall, or for those youngsters who are less than 4 feet, 9 inches tall.

All children must be present at Saturday’s event.

Certified technicians will be on hand to provide parents and caregivers with information regarding the appropriate seat for each child’s age, weight and height.

“Unintentional injuries, specifically motor vehicle crashes, are the leading cause of death for children,” Melissa Matey, public information office for Troop B, said.

“Child passengers are safest in the rear seat of the vehicle and should remain in the rear seat until at a minimum 12 years old. Child safety seats, including booster seats, offer the best protection for children in the event of a crash.

“The booster seat step is often skipped by parents and caregivers, which can lead to severe injuries or death in a motor vehicle crash. When properly installed and used, child seats can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71 percent for children younger than 1 and by 54 percent for children between 1 and 4 years old.”

Booster seats will be provided to the public on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Drive honors 6-year-old

St. Matthew the Apostle Community Life Center, 10021 Jefferson Highway in River Ridge, will hold a blood drive from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday in memory of Kendall Oliver Springman, who died of leukemia in 2011 at age 6.

Blood donors of all types are needed.

During Kendall’s four-year battle with leukemia, he used between 300 and 400 units of blood or blood platelets, according to his father, Ken Springman.

Ken adds that hundreds of children locally are fighting a blood cancer, and that Children’s Hospital alone uses about 700 units each month.
