The Rotary Club of Harahan recently awarded $12,000 in scholarships to East Jefferson Parish high school students.

Kayla Penny, of Kenner, graduate of Archbishop Chapelle High School, was awarded an $8,000 scholarship. Awarded a $1,000 scholarship were: Jacob Clay, of Metairie, graduate of Archbishop Rummel High School; Kory Pilet, of Metairie, graduate of Archbishop Rummel High School; Olivia Mayeaux, of Metairie, graduate of Archbishop Chapelle High School; and Ashanti Turner, of Kenner, graduate of Riverdale High School.

All of the recipients were awarded their scholarships at an awards luncheon during the Rotary Club of Harahan’s Friday meeting June 14 at Smilie’s Restaurant.

The scholarships are funded by the Harahan Rotary Scholarship Foundation with money raised at the Elmwood Classic Road Race.

The race takes place in February each year in the Elmwood Business Park. It has raised more than $240,000 and paid out over $162,000 in scholarships in its 27 years.
