The Fourth of July is next week, and a traditional celebration will be held once again this year in Metairie.
Grab your blankets and lawn chairs and head out to the annual Uncle Sam Jam from 5 to 11 p.m. Wednesday at Lafreniere Park, 3000 Downs Blvd., Metairie. It is free and open to the public.
Festivities get underway at 5 p.m. with three local musical acts scheduled to perform. From 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Christian Serpas and Ghost Town will perform followed by the New Orleans Concert Band from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
At 9 p.m., there will be a fireworks display followed by a performance by The Bucktown All Stars from 9:15 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Girl Scout camp registration
Registration is open for a day camp program sponsored by the Girl Scouts Louisiana East council.
Called “Camp Aspire,” the three-day summer camp will be held July 16 to July 18 from 9 a.m. to noon each day at Grace King High School, 4301 Grace King Place, Metairie.
The camp is open to girls in kindergarten through seventh grades. Activities include a program on environmental issues, games and music.
The cost is $30 for girls who already are scouts and $42 per person for those new to Girl Scouting and includes the annual membership fee.

Music available at library
Anyone with a Jefferson Parish library card may participate in a new download music service that offers access to about 3 million songs, including Sony Music’s catalog of artists which includes more than 10,000 labels with music that originate in more than 60 countries.
Freegal Music Service is a downloadable music service in which anyone with a library card can download three songs a week with their barcode and pin number. Freegal works with any MP3 device, including iPods.
Patrons in good standing with the library can enter the Freegal site via the Jefferson Parish Library website. Also, there is no software to download, and there are no digital rights management restrictions.
Take the following steps to download music:
- Go to the library’s website — http://www.jefferson.lib.la.us — and click on the Freegal icon.
- Enter your library card number as well as the PIN number and proceed to the site. Music can be searched by genre, artist, album or composer.
- Music can be downloaded by clicking the “download now” link.
- Click on the “save” prompt once the song is selected.
Library staff will be able to assist patrons who may have questions.
