Hospital to screen for skin, breast cancer
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center at St. Tammany Parish Hospital is hosting a free skin and breast cancer screening from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Kmart, 3555 Highway 190, Mandeville.
An appointment is required for each screening. Call (888) 616-4687 for more information.
A visual skin exam will be performed by a doctor. This screening is available to those who have not had a doctor perform a skin screening in the past 12 months.
Clinical breast exams will be provided by a doctor for women age 18 and older. Screening mammograms are available for women age 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in the past 12 months. Mammograms are free for women without health insurance.
Transcending cancer through meditation
The Ochsner Cancer Institute’s Support Group will host “Transcending Cancer Through Meditation” for cancer patients and their families at 6 p.m. June 13, at Ochsner Medical Center Cardiology Auditorium, New Concourse area, third floor.
The medical center is located at 1514 Jefferson Highway, Jefferson.
Dr. Indranill Basu Ray, an attending physician and assistant professor of medicine at Ochsner, a trained cardiologist and a mind-body expert, has practiced meditation for more than 20 years and has trained in the practice with multiple masters.
His expertise in the field is widely recognized, and he has been invited to present talks and conduct meditation workshops worldwide. Dr. Basu Ray promotes meditation as a supplement to — not a replacement for — standard medical therapy.

Head over to Cafe NOMA at New Orleans Museum of Art at 6 p.m. June 19 for a cooking demonstration, tasting and nutrition tips offered by Ralph Brennan Restaurant Group in partnership with Touro Infirmary.
The demonstration celebrates this month’s “eat local challenge,” a campaign to encourage people to cook and eat foods grown within 200 miles of where they live.
Chef Chris Montero’s cooking demonstration and tasting will feature garlic shrimp with a tomato basil rice pilaf. The dish uses all local ingredients: fresh Gulf shrimp, Plaquemines Creole tomatoes, Jazzmen Louisiana brown rice and fresh garden basil.
