Students chosen as presidential scholars

Benjamin Franklin High School senior William J. McGrew and Aidaana U. Amanbekova of Mount Carmel Academy have been named to the 49th class of U.S. Presidential Scholars, among 141 high school seniors nationwide recognized for their accomplishments in academics and the arts.

Every year, the White House Commission on Presidential Scholars, appointed by the president, selects one boy and one girl in each state, along with students from overseas territories, for the honor.

The scholars are selected based on their academic success, artistic excellence, essays, school evaluations and transcripts, as well as evidence of community service, leadership and demonstrated commitment to high ideals.
