Einstein school hosts musical extravaganza

Einstein Charter School will present the school’s musical ensemble and jazz band in performances and host special appearances by notable New Orleans musicians from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the school, 5100 Cannes St.

Math teachers
to gather at Tulane

Teachers will convene July 15 to July 19 at Tulane University to discuss issues and ideas in secondary school math and science instruction in the 21st century.

2013 MSI instructors include math professionals from schools such as St. Mark’s School in Southborough, Mass.; Phillips Academy; and St. Mark’s Anglican Community School in Perth, Australia.

More than 20 courses will be offered, including physics for math teachers, labs for geometry and calculus, hands-on ideas to motivate middle schoolers, “challenging the math challenged” and courses in using the iPad in instruction.

Jefferson school names principal

Adierah Berger has been named principal of the Jefferson Parish campus of International School of Louisiana, said Sean Wilson, head of school.

Berger will open the new ISL-JP campus at 8101 Simon Ave., in Metairie, the former Ralph J. Bunche Accelerated Academy, for the 2013-14 school year.

A native New Orleanian, Berger began working for ISL in 2009 as a middle school science teacher, became a lead teacher in 2011 and ISL-JP’s assistant principal in 2012.

Berger holds a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and chemistry from the University of New Orleans and a master’s from Tulane’s School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine.

For the 2013-14 school year, ISL-JP will offer traditional language immersion in Spanish and French for grades K-8 and a language intensive program in middle school.

Mount Carmel is tennis runner-up

On May 3, the Mount Carmel Academy tennis team became the state runner-up after losing by one point in the State Tournament. This is the Mount Carmel team’s fifth consecutive year of bringing home a state tennis trophy: In 2010, Mount Carmel was the state champion and since 2011 the Cubs have earned the state runner-up title.
