What’s New @ The Library: Program takes young readers around the world

“Many Children, Many Cultures, Many Books” is the theme for the Pebbles Center’s annual “El día de los niños/El día de los libros” program, which translates to “Children’s Day/Book Day.”

Día, as it is most commonly referred to, emphasizes the importance of literacy for children of all linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Each Día program focuses on a different country or world area and is held at various New Orleans Public Library branches in April.

Participants receive a “passport” to be stamped for completing Día goals, such as attending a Día program at the library, or reading a story about another country. Four stamps earn a small prize.

On Thursday at 10:30 a.m., the Hubbell branch will host a special Día storytime for toddlers featuring stories from Asia.

The Children’s Resource Center will have Día activities and a storytime featuring France at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

More Día events are scheduled throughout the remainder of April and will feature Africa, Indonesia and South American countries, with a culminating event held April 30 at the Children’s Resource Center, featuring Calliope Puppets.
