South Louisiana Swim Team of Metairie, Hammond and Laplace places first in state

The South Louisiana Swim Team of Metairie, Hammond and Laplace placed first in the 8 & Under Regional Spring Championship swim meet March 23 and 24 at the University of New Orleans.

Teams from across the state competed in the event. SLST placed first out of 16 teams, scoring 1,591 points.

Ava Shields, 6, of Albany, placed first in 25-yard freestyle, first in 25-yard backstroke, first in 25-yard breaststroke, second in 50-yard freestyle and first in 100-yard individual mkedley.

She was the overall first-place girls’ 6 years and under high-point winner.

Shields’ 25-yard backstroke time of 21.18 was fast enough to set an 8 & Under Championship meet record, as well as a UNO pool record. The previous record had been set in 2004.

Colin Candebat, 7, of Norco placed first in 25-yard freestyle, first in 25-yard backstroke, second in 25-yard breaststroke, first in 25-yard butterfly, first in 100-yard individual medley and first in 50-yard freestyle. Candebat was the first-place overall 7-year-old boy high-point winner.

Drew Schafer, 8, of Laplace placed third in 25-yard freestyle, fourth in 50-yard freestyle, fourth in 25-yard backstroke and second in 25-yard breaststroke. Schafer was the first runner-up in the 8-year-old boys division.
