Young dancers perform ‘Panorama’ with Graham Company
A cast of 33 young New Orleans student dancers performed the ballet “Panorama” at the Mahalia Jackson Theater for the Martha Graham Dance Company on March 23 under the direction of former leading Graham dancer Susan Kikuchi.
Rehearsals took place earlier at Tulane University.
The 1935 ballet was part of a program that featured the New York-based modern dance company performing “Appalachian Spring,” set to music by Aaron Copeland.
“Panorama” was the result of a partnership between the New Orleans Ballet Association and the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, which recently celebrated the 20th anniversary of the NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance.
The NORDC/NOBA Center for Dance invited its three partner institutions — the Newcomb Dance Program from Tulane University’s Department of Theatre and Dance, New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts and Lusher Charter School — to join forces in the project.
With help from funding provided by Chevron, the partnership between NOBA and NORDC (formerly NORD) has provided more than 35,000 tuition-free dance classes since its inception.
