Library calendars for New Orleans and Jefferson Parish, March 28, 2013

Just like New Orleans where it seems something is always happening, the New Orleans Public Library provides communities with a wide range of events and programs at its 14 locations. For that reason, I am pleased to have this opportunity to share more information about great library activities.

One event that is a natural fit for this food-crazed town is the second annual Edible Book Festival on April 6 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alvar Branch, 913 Alvar Street. The library and the New Orleans SIFT organization will celebrate this festival where food and literature are literally brought together.

The highlight is the edible book contest, where entries must be made of edible material and look like a book, be a pun on a book title, or be a reference to a character or scene. Contest categories include Novel Eats, most inspired use of literature or literary reference; Cooked Book, best book-like structure; Upper Crust, adult best in show; and Bound for Greatness, 12 and younger best in show. Entries are judged and eaten by all who attend.

In addition to the contest, there will be an activity area for children to create paper puppets of famous literary characters, other hands-on activities and live music.

I hope you will join us for some delicious literature at the library. Bon app├ętit! Visit http://www.neworleanspubliclibrary.org.

Charles Brown is executive director of the New Orleans Public Library.
