The Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority will sponsor a public forum on addictive disorders on Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Jefferson Parish School System office, 501 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey.

The forum, which is free and open to the public, will assist JPHSA in identifying and prioritizing the needs of Jefferson Parish residents specific to addictive disorders.

Also, JPHSA and the Office of Behavioral Health will update participants on state and local services and support groups for individuals with addictions to alcohol, drugs, and/or gambling as well as prevention resources. Participants will be asked to share their comments, concerns, and experiences with both addictive disorders and prevention services in Jefferson Parish and at the state level.

Special memorial

The Redfish Base Chapter of the United States Submarine Veterans will unveil the USS Golet (SS-361) Submariner Memorial at 11 a.m. Saturday at Veterans Memorial at Causeway Boulevard and Veterans Memorial Highway.

A total of 3,505 American submariners died in World War II and 52 submarines were lost during the war. The Submarine Veterans of World War II assigned each of the 52 lost submarines to a state for the purpose of establishing memorials to the dedication of the men and boats. The USS Golet (SS-361) was assigned to the state of Louisiana.

Senior expo is March 14

The Jefferson Council on Aging will once again sponsor its Senior Expo on March 14 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Alario Center, 2000 Segnette Blvd., Westwego.

The event is an opportunity for seniors, caregivers and those with disabilities to get firsthand information about community resources available in the Jefferson Parish and surrounding areas.

There will be over 100 booths with information on healthy aging and quality of life issues for seniors in Jefferson Parish.

The JCOA provides a number of services, most of which are free of charge, for senior citizens throughout the parish including health care issues, legal services, nutritional information and assistance, transportation, employment services and senior center activities and programs.

Ochsner Family Fest

The 28th annual Ochsner 5K Family Fest is Saturday at 4:30 p.m. along the levee area behind Ochsner on River Road in Old Jefferson.

The event includes a one-mile run/walk and a 5K run/walk. After the races, the Rhythm and Soul party will follow and feature live music by the Prescriptions as well as food and refreshments by more than 30 local restaurants.

There will also be activities and events for children ages two to 12. Special guests include the 610 Stompers, the Saintsations and Gumbo, the Saints mascot.

The race registration fee is $30 per person and includes the party.

If you only want to attend the party and not participate in the races, tickets are $20 for adults and $5 for children 10 and under.

Proceeds from the event will go to the cardiology, transplant and the Change Kids, Change the Future programs at Ochsner.

College choir to perform in Harahan

The Dillard University Choir will perform at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 6500 Jefferson Highway, Harahan, during the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday.

The choir is under the direction of Professor S. Carver Davenpor, who has directed the choir at Dillard for 40 years. The choir’s repertoire will include classical works as well as popular and folk songs.

Comedic production

The Rivertown Theaters for the Performing Arts, 325 Minor St., Kenner, will present the comedy “Noises Off” at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday, March 15, 16, 22 and 23, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 17 and 24.

The show is under the direction of David Hoover.

Individual tickets are $30 with discounts for seniors, students and military personnel.

Pet blessing this weekend

The Unity Church, 3939 Veterans Memorial Blvd., Metairie, will sponsor a pet blessing Saturday at noon at the church.

The members of Camerata Musica Limburg from Germany will give a concert Saturday at the Deutsches Haus, 1023 Ridgewood Drive, Metairie.

Doors open at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served after the concert.
