Award-winning children’s author Sylvia Rouss will be the special guest of the Community Day School on Feb. 25 at 9:30 a.m. at the school, 3747 West Esplanade Ave., Metairie.
Rouss is the author of the children’s book series “Sammy Spider” and “The Littlest Pair.”
She will read to the children from her newest book, “Sammy’s First Purim,” as well as from one of her most well-known books, “No Rules for Michael.”
Following the readings, there will be an activity and snacks for children while Rouss answers questions from parents and teachers about her books and writing.
The program is open to all area nursery school and kindergarten students, their teachers and parents from throughout the area. Also, students not yet enrolled in school and their parents may also attend.

The Kenner Police Department will hold a self-defense course for women beginning next week.
The classes, which are free, will be held from 6:45 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Feb. 21. The program’s aim is to teach women self-defense techniques and how to execute them properly if they are ever confronted by an attacker.
The course is open to women 13 and older. Participants may take the course as many times as desired to learn the latest self-defense and safety techniques. The course is taught by certified police officers who conduct group discussions and demonstrations on such topics as the definitions of types of sexual assault, lawful means of self-defense, abduction, risk awareness, recognition, reduction and avoidance.
Participants also will have the opportunity, if they so choose, to practice self-defense techniques with a certified instructor. In order to sign up, participants must agree to be present all three days of class.

Women’s group to meet
Magnificat, a Catholic ministry for women, will sponsor a breakfast Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at the Landmark Hotel, 2601 Severn Ave., Metairie.
The guest speaker will be Judy Landrieu Klein.

Weather training planned
The Jefferson Parish office of Emergency Management, along with the National Weather Service, will hold two severe weather sky warning training classes this month.
The program is part of the Storm Ready program to help area residents improve communications and safety skills needed before, during and after a major weather event.
The classes will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the West Bank Regional Library, 2751 Manhattan Blvd., Harvey, and again on Feb. 23 also from 10 a.m. to noon at the East Bank Regional Library, 4747 West Napoleon Ave., Metairie.

The topic is love
The Jefferson Genealogical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 4201 Transcontinental Drive, Metairie.
Guest speaker is Patricia Brady, Ph.D., a social and cultural historian. And since it is Valentine’s Day, Brady will discuss the relationship between Rachel and Andrew Jackson. The subject is taken from her book “A Being So Gentle, The Frontier Love Story of Rachel and Andrew Jackson.”
The meeting is open to the public.
Civil War group to meet
The New Orleans Civil War Roundtable will meet at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Smilie’s Restaurant, 5725 Jefferson Highway, Old Jefferson.
Guest speaker will be Frank O’Reily, who will give a talk titled “Mud March.”
The program is free. For those wishing to stay for dinner, the cost is $25 per person.
