Cabrini High plays host to speech tournament

Cabrini High School hosted 15 Louisiana high school teams at the annual Green and Gold Quest Speech Tournament on Jan. 18 and 19 on the Cabrini campus.

The team from Ben Franklin High School took first place, St. Augustine took second and St. Mary’s Dominican placed third.

This year’s event, organized by speech team moderator Michelle Fortier, a 1997 graduate of Cabrini, and Caroline Argus Harris, who graduated in 1987, included Archbishop Chapelle, Grace King, Benjamin Franklin, Caldwell Parish High School, St. Frederick High School in Monroe, Academy of Our Lady, Pope John Paul II, the International High School of New Orleans, Christ Episcopal, St. Augustine, Haynes, St. Joseph’s Academy, Mount Carmel, Holy Cross and Dominican high schools.

More than 100 students competed in 11 speech events, including Humorous and Original Oratory, Dramatic, Duo Interpretation, Duet Acting, Extemporaneous, Original Oral, Interpretation, Declamation, and Impromptu competition with the winning students qualifying for the City District Championships and the Louisiana State Speech and Debate Tournament.
