UNO signs Holy Cross baseball players

NEW ORLEANS Holy Cross High School seniors Brandon Herrera and Sammy Capielano signed national letters of intent to play baseball for the University of New Orleans.

Herrera, of Slidell, has been steadfast in the Tiger lineup in the infield and on the mound for the past two seasons, highlighted by an All-District, All-Metro and 1st Team 3A All-State performance as a sophomore leading the Tigers to a state semi-final appearance. He is on pace to graduate with high honors in May.

Herrera is the son of Janet and Angel Herrera.

Capielano, of River Ridge, has been a three-year starter in the middle infield for the Tigers garnering All-District honors twice.

He was named the 9-4A District MVP, and 1st Team 4A All-State. As a junior, he led the Tigers to a state finals appearance. He is the son of Tina and Todd Capielano.

“Brandon and Sammy typify what HC baseball is all about,” said coach Greg Battistella. “They lead by example, they are extremely hard workers on the field and in the classroom, but most importantly they are outstanding young men.”

The players will be joining three former Holy Cross Tigers on the UNO roster: Shayne LeRouge, class of 2011, Jordan Fontenelle, 2012, and Blake Prest, 2012.
