The main branch of the public library hosts a lecture and performance Thursday in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend.

Keith Medley, historian and author of “We as Freemen: Plessy vs. Ferguson” will speak on the topic “Still Overcoming: Celebrating People and Places,” at noon in the auditorium.

Students from Samuel J. Green Charter School will perform, choreographed by Baderinwa Rolland.

Mardi Gras Indian to visit: It’s getting closer to Carnival Day, a time for the city’s special Mardi Gras Indian tradition to shine.

Learn about the tradition and enjoy an up-close look at the feathered glory of a Mardi Gras Indian costume Saturday at the Algiers Regional Branch Library, 3014 Holiday Drive, when Big Chief Tyrone Casby of Algiers’ own Mohawk Hunters pays a visit. The program begins at 1:30 p.m.
