Episcopal church offers special service

St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, 2216 Metairie Road, Old Metairie, will sponsor its “The Longest Night” service on Dec. 12, at 6:30 p.m.

“This is a worship service with two main themes — remembrance of those persons who have died and to remember that the Light of Christ shines most brightly in the darkness of our losses,” said Terri Sarchione, St. Martin’s administrative assistant.

The timing of the service is also significant in a couple of ways, Sarchione said.

“On the seasonal front, Dec. 12 approaches the winter solstice, the longest night of the year, she said. “And Dec. 12 also falls in the heart of our Advent preparations for Christmas. For many, the expectation is that everything should be wonderful, when in reality some may be having a difficult time.”

This service which is open to the public, will include prayers, readings, hymns and the lighting of candles that are then placed on the altar. It lasts about 45 minutes.
