LSU’s Craig Loston on Thorpe watch list

LSU senior safety Craig Loston landed on his third watch list of the preseason Friday when it was announced he was under consideration for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to college football’s best defensive back.

Loston is among 48 players on the watch list, including three others from Southeastern Conference schools: Alabama’s Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Vanderbilt’s Andre Hal and Georgia’s Damian Swann. An SEC player has claimed the award the past four seasons, including LSU’s Patrick Peterson in 2010 and Morris Claiborne in ’11.

Loston was fifth on the team in tackles with 55 last season to go with three interceptions. A second-team All-SEC pick in 2012, he’s also on the watch lists for the Bednarik Award and Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which honor the nation’s top defensive player.

UL-Monroe senior Isaiah Newsome also is on the watch list. As a junior, he led the Warhawks with four interceptions while adding 57 tackles (36 solo) and five pass breakups.
