Pelicans to host predraft workouts

The Pelicans will conduct predraft workouts Friday morning for prospects in preparation for the June 27 NBA draft.

The workouts will take place at the Alario Center, where the team has practiced, and are the Pelicans’ first for this year’s draft. The prospects, whom the team did not identify, will work out for the team’s basketball operations staff.

The Pelicans, who finished with the fifth-worst record in the league as the Hornets last season, have the No. 6 selection.

The workouts once were a big part of NBA teams’ predraft evaluation. But in recent years, prospects to be chosen high have opted to skip the workouts, feeling it can hurt their status.

“It’s a different situation now where guys don’t want to work out,” Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. “I’m not really a fan of that, but it’s the climate that we live in.”

Williams said he, General Manager Dell Demps and assistant GM Tim Connelly have had many discussions concerning who would be the best choice at the Pelicans’ draft spot.

Demps and Connelly were in Spain last week at the European camp for prospects. Croatia small forward Dario Saric heads a list of top European prospects.
