Columnist and photographer Steven Forster is bringing his lively coverage of New Orleans’ social events to The Advocate.

Forster documented New Orleans social events for The Times-Picayune for 19 years on the Big Easy page. His signature style spotlights New Orleanians from all walks of life, celebrating everything from crawfish boils to state visits, birthday parties to art openings.

“I never know what I’m going to shoot,” Forster said. “I might be at your party and find out about your sister’s party. I might have a plan mapped out for the evening, but you never know where you’re going to end up, and that’s what keeps it fun.”

Peter Kovacs, The Advocate’s editor, said Forster’s work should begin appearing soon.

“We live in a community that has made partying into an art form, and Steven has a unique ability to capture the best of the people who make our parties so special.

“We’re looking forward to publishing his work in New Orleans’ only daily newspaper.”

Forster has been a professional photographer for more than 25 years. His subjects include hundreds of entertainers and statesmen, such as Drew Brees, Ella Fitzgerald, Mikhail Gorbachev and several American presidents. His work is part of the permanent collection of the New Orleans Museum of Art, among other museums.

“What I want to bring is the most exciting page, the page you look for every Sunday when you are having your coffee, to see what is happening in the city, what celebrities have been in town, who’s been out running around,” Forster said. “I want to amp it up, and I can’t wait to do it for The Advocate.”

He joins a growing number of Times-Picayune personalities who have left to join The Advocate since the newspaper was purchased by businessman John Georges in May. The Advocate, which is boosting its coverage of New Orleans, has signed up columnists James Gill and Stephanie Grace as well as a group of Pulitzer Prize-winning editors and reporters.
