With a little more than half of their spring work behind them, the New Orleans Saints are set to enter the third and final phase of their nine-week offseason program this week.
The week will begin easily enough Monday with the 22nd annual Saints Hall of Fame Celebrity Golf Classic at the Chateau Golf and Country Club in Kenner, where coach Sean Payton, members of his staff and many current and former Saints players will participate.
After that, the Saints will get back to work as Payton conducts the first three of 10 organized team activities (OTAs) they’re allowed over the next four weeks to wrap up the offseason program.
The next four weeks are officially called Phase Three of the program. That includes a three-day full-squad minicamp, which is scheduled for June 4-6 at the team’s Metairie training facility.
Phase One, which consisted of the first two weeks of the program, was limited to strength and conditioning work and rehab for players who finished last season on injured reserve.
Phase Two, which was held over the last three weeks, includes player instruction and on-field individual drills with coaches for the first time. During that phase, offensive players were not allowed to go against defensive players even though some special teams work was allowed.
The OTA portion of the program, or Phase Three, permits teams to hold non-contact 11-on-11 team drills without pads. Only helmets are allowed.
Following the full-squad minicamp June 4-6, the Saints, who also held a three-day rookie minicamp last weekend, will have one final week of on-field workouts before wrapping up the spring June 13.
The NFL’s annual Rookie Symposium will be held June 24-28, but the rest of team will be off until training camp commences in late July.
While the Saints Hall of Fame Golf Classic is sold out, tickets remain on sale for the third annual Fox 8 Saints Hall of Fame Auction/Reception on Sunday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the team’s indoor facility and cafeteria located at 5800 Airline Drive in Metairie.
Fans will have an opportunity to tour the facility and bid on the live auction, which consists of 22 items. Tickets can be purchased at the door by cash, credit card or check until 6 p.m.
Proceeds from the auction and golf tournament will benefit the Saints Hall of Fame Museum, which is located at Gate B on the Plaza level at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
