Our Views: Volunteer efforts pay big rewards

We’re heartened by a recent survey that showed one out of every four students and employees of the University of Louisiana System’s nine universities volunteered during 2011-2012.

The nine campuses in the UL System are Grambling, Louisiana Tech, McNeese, Nichols, Northwestern, Southeastern, UL at Lafayette, UL at Monroe and the University of New Orleans.

Service learning — the practice of learning through local volunteer efforts — has become a big part of the student experience at many campuses across the country. The UL System has embraced the concept for a number of years now, so we’re not surprised that so many of the system’s students and employees reported an active involvement in volunteering.

Student and university employee volunteer efforts help strengthen ties between universities and their host communities. Volunteering also reminds students and faculty that the best way to learn is through doing.

We salute the UL System’s students and employees for their volunteer efforts. We hope these activities help nurture a lifetime habit of volunteering for students at the system’s campuses.
