Three pre-K programs are offered through the school system: LA4, 8g and Title 1, each with different criteria for admission. During the application process, families will be notified concerning the programs for which they qualify and will be given a screening appointment. All prospective students must be screened. For the first time this year, the pre-kindergarten slots will not be allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, the LA4 and 8g programs will be filled with a two-part lottery system based on financial need. There is no change to the process for the Title 1 classes. During the week of March 11, families will be able to register at any of the following four sites between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.: Bonnabel Magnet Academy boardroom, 2801 Bruin Drive, Kenner. East Jefferson High School gymnasium, 400 Phlox St., Metairie. West Jefferson High School auditorium, 2200 Eighth St., Harvey. Harry S Truman Middle School, 5417 Ehret Road, Marrero. Students with last names beginning with A-M can apply on March 11 or March 13. Students with last names beginning with N-Z can apply on March 12 or March 14. All students can apply on March 15. “We made changes to ensure that the application process is accessible and user-friendly for parents,” Superintendent James Meza said in a news release. “Pre-kindergarten and other early childhood education programs are critical to the academic success of our children, and we want to encourage all Jefferson Parish families with pre-kindergarten-age children to submit an application.” Information can be found on the district’s website at http://www.jppss.k12.la.us.
