Our Views: Their coach back to Saints

Welcome back, Coach.

The return of Sean Payton as head coach is a bit of good news for New Orleans Saints fans. We look forward to his resuming his duties.

“I clearly recognize that mistakes were made, which led to league violation,” Payton said in a prepared statement, alluding to the scandal of bounties for knocking opposing players out of games. “Furthermore, I have assured the commissioner a more diligent protocol will be followed.”

Amen to that. For all the deserved criticism of how the NFL handled this episode, the reality is that professional sports is a business, and scandals like the bounty issue cannot be tolerated.

We look forward to more successful seasons under Payton’s leadership.

I considered myself a fan, not so much of the Saints, but of the excellence I thought I was watching on the field; then I felt my naivete: I was watching a Louisiana bounty game. I'm not sure I'll ever return to my former stupidity.>>>>What strikes me most about this gratuitous juxtaposition to the Nagin opinion on the same page is the focus, the NFL "deserved criticism" for the way they expressed intolerance. (Not that Nagin deserves any slack.)>>>>The helmet-to-helmet hits continue. Let's encourage the NFL to express intolerance and hope the Saints do their part. Let a helmet-to-helmet hit result in ejection for the day and a $10,000 fine.
