Waggaman shooting linked to burglary

WAGGAMAN -- A man who was shot multiple times in Waggaman last week was a suspected burglar, and his shooting was in retaliation for an earlier crime, according to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

On Jan. 18, deputies were called out to the 300 block of Jeffer Drive and found a 26-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds to the body. The victim was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and investigators began searching for a suspect.

However, according to an arrest report, the victim later told detectives that the shooter was a man named “Al” who was friends with Warren “Wo” Fontenette III. The victim told detectives that prior to the shooting he and Fontenette had a disagreement because Fontenette accused him of burglarizing his home.

Later that day, the victim said he was walking down Jeffer Drive when he saw Fontenette drive by in his vehicle. The victim tried to avoid Fontenette, but he pulled alongside him and “Al” got out of the vehicle carrying a gun, according to the arrest report. The victim said that “Al” shot him several times before getting back into the car and fleeing the scene. Investigators found eight spent shell casings at the scene, and the victim was wounded in the abdomen, thigh, foot and buttocks.

Fontenette was booked with principle to attempted second degree murder on Wednesday. Detectives have not released an official identification for “Al.”
