Advocate file photos -- U.S. Sen. David Vitter, R-La., left, on Monday called Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., an “idiot” for comments Reid made saying last year’s Hurricane Sandy was worse than Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Vitter calls Reid ‘idiot’ for comparison

Sen. David Vitter on Monday called Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., an “idiot” for saying last year’s Hurricane Sandy was worse than Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

While calling for Congress to approve a disaster aid package for Sandy victims, Reid on Friday said Katrina was “nothing in comparison” to the devastation caused by Sandy. In a statement on Monday, Reid, D-Nev., said he “simply misspoke.”

But Vitter, R-La., was still critical, and the Republican Party of Louisiana demanded Reid apologize.

“Sadly, Harry Reid has again revealed himself to be an idiot, this time gravely insulting Gulf Coast residents,” Vitter said in a prepared statement. “Both Katrina and Sandy were horribly destructive storms that caused real human misery. And by most any measure, Katrina was our worst natural disaster in history.”

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, also chimed in to call Reid’s comments “repugnant” and to criticize him for comparing “tragedies” and seemingly preferring the Northeast over the Gulf Coast.

Katrina killed more than 1,800 people and caused well more than $100 billion in damage. While Sandy may have destroyed more homes, the superstorm took the lives of about 250 people and caused an estimated $60 billion to $80 billion in damage.

Reid’s comments came in pushing for a roughly $60 billion Sandy aid package that the Senate has already approved that has taken longer in the aftermath of Sandy than it did after Katrina.

The House approved nearly $10 billion of it Friday. Many Republicans and Democrats were upset the House failed to approve the full aid package last week before the new Congress convened.

“When we had that devastating Katrina, we were there within days taking care of you — Mississippi, Alabama and especially Louisiana — within days,” Reid said Friday. “We are now past two months with the people of New York.

“And, the people of New Orleans and that area, they were hurt, but nothing in comparison to what’s happened to the people of New England,” Reid said.

On Monday, Reid said: “I have worked hard with Sen. (Mary) Landrieu to ensure that the people of the Gulf Coast have the resources they need to fully recover, and I will continue to advocate on their behalf until the region is fully recovered.”

Landrieu, D-La., came to Reid’s defense after he clarified his statement.

“Sen. Reid has been a strong advocate for the Gulf Coast’s recovery after hurricanes Katrina and Rita,” Landrieu said in a statement. “I am confident that he will continue to provide extraordinary leadership and support to the people of Louisiana and the Gulf Coast moving forward, as well as champion the needs of the people of the East Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.”

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the outrage over Reid’s comments were “irrelevant” and a “sideshow.”

“It really doesn’t matter whether Sandy was bigger than Katrina, or Katrina was bigger than Sandy. They were both catastrophic events for the American people,” he said. “The bigger message is the American people came to the aid of us when we were hurt and when we were in our darkest hour. And we should be in full support of all of our fellow Americans in the Northeast. And Congress should act immediately and they should not piecemeal this thing.”

Daniel Monteverde of The Advocate’s New Orleans bureau contributed to this report.

Mitch Landrieu really should keep his mouth shut. Mary's vote for Obamacare will cause enough financial misery in this entire country over the next 4 or 5 years to easily outrank any natural disaster. As far as Katrina, my relative was one of those who lost everything and whose home is now an empty concrete slab and he lived in Mississippi. People seem to forget that we had two devastating hurricanes in Louisiana that year, Katrina and Rita. Katrina wiped out Southeast Louisiana and then Rita finished it off by wiping out Southwest Louisiana. Buck up Northeast! You're going to get the same, incompetent response that we did from your governments, both local and national, much of it withou proper documentation and rife with fraud from fly-by-night, unlicensed charlatans waiting to begin their feeding frenzy. tWelcome to the party.

Obama, the President most known for adding more federal red tape, claimed he would rid the recovery process of red tape during his 2 hour photo-op. Red tape seems to be the Washington way of doing things.

3) Comment by agagent - 09/01/2013

Hurricane Sandy hit New York on about October 29th and the Senate passed its bill about 2 months later, so followed by the House. The federal agencies never ran out of money but operated as many government agencies do . . . In a slow and inefficient manner. Congress never showed any urgency in the matter since it waited about 2 months. If the Senate really wanted a quick passage in the House, it should have passed a clean, bill free of pork. Reid’s comments were dumb, and he wanted to use the crisis to pass things that he could not normally get through Congress (sounds familiar).

Hey liberals defending Reid who is indeed an idiot just as Vitter is a hypocrite, why can't we get a budget from Boy Wonder Reid? He does collect a paycheck right? At my job if I don't actually do the work for 4 years I was hired for I think I might be fired by now. Just sayin.

twinkie1cat, you do realize that this isn't about Jindal or schools, right? .

I love when idiots like Reid says stupid things, the Dems want it quickly brushed under the carpet, just like Benghazi and Fast and Furious. The idiot Reid can lie about anything he wants, but should never be questioned or derided for saying idiotic things because he's the speaker? When has Reid ever shown decorum? When has the MSM called him on his numerous lies? PolitiFact, the independent fact checking entity, has concluded that Reid's accusation that Mitt Romney didn't pay taxes for ten years is so unfounded that it deserves the group's "pants on fire" label. He also said that Romney should be the one to disprove his lies. Now I think Reid should be held accountable for those lies. If I were Romney, I would sue the pant's off of Reid for libel or slander. And what's even funnier, Reid said that Romney wasn't a good Mormon. And I guess Reid thinks he is. LOL!!! And Mary should just shut up and count her blackmail money for voting for Obamacare. Vitter was right to make this idiot think about the stupid comments that come out of his mouth. We know why Mary won't.

The only thing worse would have been for Ried and Polosi to have had a child together. But seriously, let's ask the National Weather Service which is worse, a catagory five hurricane or a catagory one hurricane that comes on shore as a tropical storm.

9) Comment by slye753 - 08/01/2013

Americans know Reid is an idiot. but think about this. he came to washington so many years back with nothing and today is a multi-millionaire. not bad for an idiot on senators pay.

Tsk tsk. Diaper Man sets the record straight.

11) Comment by TommyRucker - 08/01/2013

Harry Reid is the poster child for what is wrong in America today as he is an advocate of hatred, strife, division, corruption, dishonesty and misinformation among many other destructive traits. This guy is doing more to destroy this country than Obama, but the are real close as they are both high ranking members of the democratic party MOB. Reid and BIden are nothing more than big time mobsters as the principles and values are rooted in the mob and their behavior is consistent with those of the mob. Harry Reid never met an issue he could not lie about or go back on his 'word'. He absolutely cannot be trusted and he is the LEADER of the democratic party MOB in the US Senate. Think about what this says about other democratic senators who elected him as their leader. It is really pathetic that he is the best the party in control of the US senate has to offer during the extremely difficult times this country is facing. PATHETIC is the only word to describe him and it is despairing to see someone like him elected to lead the US Senate. He is evidence of the dire straits we are in and of the direction we are heading. The Sandy Storm aid bill is full of pork. We need to help people but we are fools to let these people steal money that we have to borrow as we don't have it. We are fools to let them steal from our children and cowards not to even object to it.

12) Comment by TommyRucker - 08/01/2013

The important thing is it shows even more clearly how stupid Reid is and how the truth means absolutely nothing to him. It never has and never will, but then what is new with the democratic party mob. This Sandy Bill is nothing more than an excuse for the northeast to steal more money from the taxpayers. These corrupt members of congress, etc. will never let a good crisis go by without stealing some more money. This was the guiding principle of Obama's chief of staff who is now the Mayor of Chicago. These people continue to lie and then we see their fellow mob members DEFEND them. CORRUPTION is a alive and well in Washington, D.C. and unfortunately in many American cities and states. Socialism is going to cripple us but corruption is going to kill us.

DMJ-Thought I was jumping on the band wagon (analogy) but I guess I fell flat on my face (analogy) Those saying are over used and annoying, some say nothing, just saying.

16) Comment by twinkie1cat - 08/01/2013

What's wrong with a little pork in this age of budget cutting, whiny, Republicans trying to destroy everything that is right and good about America?.......Reid did sound like he had a bit of yankee bias though. Northerners always think they are better than we are, but they have funny accents and no manners. And why would anyone want to live where it is cold 8 months out of the year or more? At least we didn't have snow covering the mess up after Katrina! I mean SNOW! After a hurricane. No, I would not want to live in the Northeast. It would be nice to visit New York City however. In the Spring!

17) Comment by twinkie1cat - 08/01/2013

For once in his totally messed up and selfish Republican life, David Vitter was right....... Hurricane Katrina was much worse than Sandy in terms of lives lost and disrupted and property destroyed. Sandy looks worse partially because of the density of the population. They deserve a large wad of money to pick up the pieces with. But much of the Sandy area has recovered already where there are parts of the Katrina/Rita area that still has blue tarps because the people don't have money to fix their homes, hundreds of slabs where houses once stood and hundreds or thousands of people who permanently emigrated to other states and cities because they had nothing to go back to. And then there are those whose bodies served as food for alligators who will never be accounted for. New York does not have alligators. Plus, while the schools in New York and New Jersey are still functioning, Bobby Jindal took the opportunity to destroy the school system of New Orleans and now almost all their schools are charters or RSD, causing serious disruption to the education of a whole generation of children.

18) Comment by Chucky - 08/01/2013

“I'm tired of the Kool-aid analogy” I will give you some more DMJ “get over it” and “you own it” and “cheese to go along with all that whine” and “just saying” and "Think outside the box," and “It's Not Rocket Science” and “Think of the Children” ( my favorite ) and “I don't care what you think of me” and “that's a no-brainier” and “It is what it is” and for sure “ YOUR AN IDIOT” any one like to add ?

19) Comment by Mygulfbleedsforu - 08/01/2013

First, Vitter can go suck an egg. He'll be the one walking back a comment tomorrow, but he never, ever learns. Second and I think more important, let's get it straight once for all about the so-called "pork" in the Sandy bill. That's a lie, brought to you by the nutball-media hors and the Party of Bearing False Witness. The bill included funds to provide for "storm events that occurred in 2012 along the Gulf Coast and Atlantic Coast within the boundaries of the North Atlantic and Mississippi Valley divisions of the Corps that were affected by Hurricanes Sandy and Isaac" ... including some storm damage funds for our state and other coastal red states, possibly to avoid a filibuster. And that was just fine with Mr. Insulted.

20) Comment by unevahno - 08/01/2013

I can't believe Vitter looked up from craigslist long enough to hear anything going on in congress.

21) Comment by unevahno - 08/01/2013

Some are so easily distracted from what matters by the next shiny object. Conservatives have stated that it's time they shut the government down, but that gets no objections from the "I believe in death panels" crowd. Reid was in error on this statement, but he was spot on when he broke the story about Mitt Romney never having paid taxes before he decided to run for president.

22) Comment by KB - 08/01/2013

They're all idiots in Washington!

23) Comment by mcBR - 08/01/2013

Question: Based on the photo at the top of the page, who looks like the bigger idiot? I'm joking, of course. Harry Reid should apologize for his out of touch statement, and David Vitter shouldn't call his fellow senator and idiot ("once again"). There is supposed to be a level of decorum in the Senate, even when admonishing someone for a stupid statement.

24) Comment by DMJ - 08/01/2013

What does this have to do with Obama? According to Chris Christie, Obama did very well during this disaster. I guess you guys have drank too much anti-Obama Kool-aid? Man, I'm tired of the Kool-aid analogy, by the way...

25) Comment by Attila - 08/01/2013

You are right about the number of people that keep drinking the Obamha Kool Aid MGS. There are so many of them that they make the Jonestown massacre look like a practice run.

26) Comment by Michael Gary Scott - 08/01/2013

I hope those of you still drinking Obama koolaide see what the Washington left really thinks about the South. The only relief they need for a Cat One is some government commodity cheese to go along with all that whine.

27) Comment by RODEO CLOWN - 08/01/2013

Simply put, this is just another example of pure, unmitigated Yankee basis on Reid's part. The passage of the 9 billion dollar "aid" package with it's 20% (2 billion dollars) of political pork, i.e, for items totally unrelated to the recovery, is another fine example of business as usual in Washington. It is a perfect example of why the deficit can not be reduced and why the Republicans, in particular the Tea Party reps hold their ground on such wasteful expenditures. I would love to see a list of the pork amendments, which reps introduced them and what state will benefit from such irresponsible expenditures.

28) Comment by Being_Stupid - 08/01/2013

If this had been a Republican that had said this, all heck would break loose. There would be nation wide protests and riots in New Orleans to remove that person from office. But since this was a Democrat, no big deal. just a slip of the tongue. Simple mistake. Nothing to see here folks. Move along now.

29) Comment by phil - 08/01/2013

So we made the point now let's get back to important things like the fiscal cliff and the national debt instead of getting side tracked. They both were terrible storms, especially if you were a person who really lost a home or a relative..

30) Comment by old yat - 08/01/2013

Reid talks trash,Vitter calls him out. Now Vitter is the bad guy.Harry,Mary, and lil' Mitch, shame on all of you.By the way Harry,it took Bush 3 days to get help to N.O. and people bashed him for that. If the Northeast has not got help in 2 months whose fault is that?Correct me if I am wrong but I believe this storm happened on Obama's watch!!!!

31) Comment by foldgers - 08/01/2013

Well, I found it funny that this was proposed as a bill to help the "Sandy" victims, yet in the rush of it all getting through, a lot of pet projects of some democrats, about $20 billion worth was thrown in...including money for something in Alaska! This is why the Republicans did not want to pass it so quickly, they wanted anything NOT to do with the hurricane out of the package. But, some people found this as an easy way to spend more taxpayer money and blame others for not passing it right away. Thank you to all those who actually read what all the money would be for and stood up for the taxpayer.

I take offense to calling Harry Reid an idiot. That is not fair to idiots.

34) Comment by Pelicanator - 08/01/2013

In the interst of accuracy, Katrina was not the deadliest or most destructive natural disaster in US history. The Galveston Hurricane of 1900 killed 8,000 people and flattened the city. This fact does not diminish the damage or suffering caused by Katrina.

35) Comment by DMJ - 08/01/2013

Mitch Landrieu, staying above the fray. A classy move. Can't wait to vote for him for governor.

36) Comment by Pelicanator - 08/01/2013

It is indeed a sad day for anyone, anywhere, when, under any circumstances, one leaves themselves open to being rightfully charged by Senator Vitter of being an idiot. But our pampered senator was dead on here. Still, one has to question Vitter's judgement here. Is it really worth calling out the Majority Leader as an idiot on this flavor-of-the-week non-issue? Vitter seems intent on burnishing his well-earned reputation as the nation's least influential Senator.
