Skeleton remains discovered in house
New Orleans — New Orleans police found skeletal remains in an abandoned house on Tuesday, but the death is still labeled as unclassified.
Police reported the discovery in the Fifth District shortly after 3:15 p.m. An officer came across the remains at a home at 1406 Elysian Fields Ave. Police were at the home because they received an anonymous tip about the skeleton.
Cleaning solution injures roommate
Metairie — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a Metairie woman Sunday after she admitted to dumping caustic cleaning liquid on her roommate’s face because he wouldn’t stop making noise at night.
Zahofung Meng, 54, was booked with aggravated battery after she gave her roommate second- and third-degree burns on his back and face with a cleaning solution. The man was taken to the Baton Rouge burn unit for treatment.
According to an arrest report, Meng walked into her unidentified roommate’s room and dumped the cleaning liquid on his back and face because of his noisy computer. She told police that she was tired of the man’s noise and that “if she couldn’t sleep, he wouldn’t sleep.”
The type of chemical she used was not immediately available, but doctors told police that the man could go blind.
Harvey man, 24,
arrested in hit-run
Terrytown — A Harvey man has been arrested after the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office accused him of leaving the scene after striking a pedestrian in the 200 block of Wright Avenue.
Victor Diaz, 24, was booked Tuesday in hit-and-run driving causing a serious injury. According to an arrest report, Diaz struck the victim as the man was walking out of his apartment complex. Diaz fled the scene after the accident but was captured later. The victim received serious internal injuries in the incident.
Police: Local teen admits to carjacking
New Orleans — New Orleans police said a local teenager confessed to a carjacking last month that resulted in the dog-napping of a beloved pet.
Damont Burton, 17, admitted to the carjacking Tuesday after being picked up from a school by police. Police said Burton punched the victim in her face and stole her car. He also stole her 11-year-old dog, Skeeter. Both Skeeter and the dog were located later by police.
Police connected Burton to the incident through DNA evidence. They said this is the second time he’s been booked with armed robbery.
Woman, 41, accused of injuring mother
Kenner — A Kenner woman was arrested on Sunday after police said she injured her 78-year-old mother after they argued about marijuana.
Colleen Able, 41, was booked with simple battery of the infirm after being arrested at her home on Nassau Avenue, according to an arrest report.
Kenner police said Able grappled with her mother after the elderly woman questioned her daughter about bringing marijuana into the home they share.
The report says Able pushed her mother to the ground, and the woman hit her head on a door frame or wall.
Mother arrested after kids left alone
Kenner — A Kenner mother was arrested Monday after police found her 8-year-old and 2-year-old alone in a home strewn with empty liquor bottles, according to police.
Police arrested Maria-Luz Lopez Cartagena at her home and booked her with two counts of child desertion. According to an arrest report, police were called out to the home after receiving a report of two children there alone.
The 8-year-old opened the door and allowed police inside where they found numerous alcohol bottles. The police managed to contact the children’s mother, who told them she had to go to work and her regular baby sitter canceled at the last minute.
Rape suspect booked on another sex count
Belle Chasse — An Algiers man already in custody on aggravated rape charges is accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a minor, according to the Plaquemines Parish Sheriff’s Office.
Dustin Richard Perez, 21, was booked with carnal knowledge of a juvenile after investigators said he had sex with a 15-year-old girl at a home in Belle Chasse in early 2012. Perez was already in custody in New Orleans after being charged with two counts of aggravated rape early this month in connection with two incidents from 2011. In those incidents, Perez is accused of raping 16-year-old girls at gunpoint.
DWI suspect, 30, tries to elude police
Bridge City — The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested a Georgia man Monday after a deputy said he found him sleeping in his car in the middle of the road.
Alejandro Ramirez, 30, was booked with obstruction of a highway, driving while intoxicated, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, driving without a license, open alcoholic container violation and driving without a lawful presence in the United States.
According to an arrest report, an officer found Ramirez sleeping in at the foot of the Huey P. Long Bridge with his car idling against a side rail. When the officer approached Ramirez and tried to wake him, Ramirez woke up and sped off in his car. The deputy chased Ramirez up the bridge and managed to crash the vehicle again against the side rail.
When the deputy finally caught Ramirez and removed him from the vehicle, the officer said he appeared heavily intoxicated. Ramirez’s blood alcohol content came back at twice the legal limit, and the deputy found three open beer cans on the car’s floorboards.
