HAMMOND — An undercover Tangipahoa Parish sheriff’s deputy shot a man Friday during a struggle near Happywoods Road and Old Baton Rouge Highway, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Undercover sheriff’s deputies and Hammond police officers were conducting a joint investigation in the area about 1:30 p.m. when a man approached the sheriff’s deputy and pointed a handgun at him, Chief Deputy Dennis Pevey said in a news release.
The deputy and the man fought over control of the weapon, which resulted in gunfire being exchanged, Pevey said.
The man was shot several times, Pevey said. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.
The deputy suffered a minor laceration to his hand, Pevey said.
State Police are investigating the incident.
