MANCHAC — An unidentified man died Thursday morning after he was struck by a train near Manchac, the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office said.
Authorities received a call around 9:30 a.m. about the incident, Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Dawn Panepinto said in an email.
Authorities from the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office, Canadian National Railroad Police and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries responded and found the dead man near the tracks.
Authorities believe a Canadian National train was traveling south near mile marker 867.5 when the train’s engineer saw the man lying on the tracks.
The engineer applied the train’s brakes and activated his horn, but the man never responded. Contact was unavoidable, Panepinto said.
The victim was transported the Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office for an autopsy, Panepinto said. Investigators have not been able to identify the man yet.
The train — a three-engine, 125-car locomotive carrying coal — was not damaged.
