Two visitors arrived at Independence Elementary on Aug. 23 to help kick off the new school year.

Fisherman Fred, played by principal Lisa Raiford, and Fisherman Red, played by administrative assistant Melanie Johnston, met with the students at IES to discuss the FISH Philosophy expectations. The four expectations are: be there, participate, choose a positive attitude and make someone’s day.

Since the island theme will continue throughout the year, the students learned about the big kahuna trophy that each class can win each week. Students also learned how to hula and the hand movements for hang ten.
