Livingston-Tangipahoa briefs for Aug. 29, 2013

SLU graduation deadline approaching

The final day for Southeastern Louisiana University students to apply to graduate in fall 2013 is Sept. 16.

The graduation application and payment deadlines will be strictly enforced, university officials said.

Candidates for associate, bachelor, master and doctoral degrees can apply for graduation by logging into their LeoNet campus accounts and choosing the “Self Service, Degree Progress/Graduation, Apply for Graduation” option. Instructions are available on the “Current Students” link at; click “Graduation Information – Apply for Graduation” or call Southeastern’s Office of Records and Registration at (985) 549-2066.

The $35 application fee should be paid directly to the Controller’s Office, located on North Campus in the Financial Aid Building.

Tangipahoa coalition promotes reading

Tangipahoa Parish children may soon have an exciting opportunity to engage in reading, thanks to a local community-wide coalition of individuals, businesses, government and literacy professionals.

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library is an early literacy initiative that provides new, age-appropriate books to children every month for the first five years of their lives for free, regardless of their family’s income. The program encourages parents to read with their children during their preschool years. All families in Tangipahoa Parish with children from birth to age 5 will be eligible to enroll.

Coalition members are asking for help from the community before Imagination Library can officially launch. Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Some retailers accept Lion’s Lagniappe card

The Lion’s Lagniappe account, which is accessible through the Southeastern Louisiana University ID card for students, faculty and staff on campus, is now being accepted at off-campus retail locations.

Lion’s Lagniappe can now be used just like a debit card at the following Hammond retailers: Smoothie King on University Avenue, both Hammond locations of the Salad Station, Pita Pit, Coop DeVille, Rende’s, and Campus Convenience. Also offering the service will be the University Avenue and Thomas Street locations of PJs and CVS Pharmacy in Hammond.

Robin Parker, director of marketing and strategic initiatives for Auxiliary Services, said additional retailers are signing up to participate. Vendors participating in the program can be identified by a “Lion’s Lagniappe Card Accepted Here” sign.

Managing a Lion’s Lagniappe account is available online, Parker added.
