Hammond author to sign new novel

Hammond author Katie Wainwright will sign copies of her second historical novel, “Secuestro,” from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. March 2 at Books A Million, 2380 Towne Center Blvd., Baton Rouge.

“Secuestro” is the sequel to “Cuba on My Mind,” an account of life in Cuba before the Castro Revolution.

Wainwright grew up in Cuba and was a tea girl at Castro’s wedding announcement party in 1948.

Wainwright lives in Hammond, where she owned and operated a real estate agency for 50 years.

Limbhangers sets annual banquet

The Livingston Limbhangers, a chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, will hold its annual banquet at 6 p.m. Saturday at the North Park Recreation Center. The event will feature silent and live auctions, raffles and other games, organizers said.

Alumni to spend day at the races

The Southeastern Louisiana University Alumni Association will host “A Day at the Races” Sunday at the New Orleans Fair Grounds.

The event is open to all Southeastern alumni and friends, 21 years of age and older, said Alumni Association Director Kathy Pittman. The cost is $55, which includes bus transportation from Hammond, clubhouse admission and lunch.

The bus will leave the Alumni Center at 10:30 a.m. and return immediately after the last race. Participants who plan to use their own transportation are welcome to meet the Southeastern group at the Fair Grounds, although the cost will remain the same, Pittman said.

The lunch menu includes a wide variety of choices, such as the Fair Grounds favorite corned beef and cabbage, seafood du jour, grilled chicken breast with garlic mushroom cream, pasta du jour, rice pilaf, vegetable du jour and dessert. Iced tea, soft drinks and coffee are included.

“Lunch will be followed by an afternoon of fun and excitement watching the races,” Pittman said. “Make plans to join us.”

Textile exhibit features clothing

Denham Springs Old City Hall Museum, 115 Mattie St., will host a textile exhibit through March 4. Items will include vintage clothing and accessories from the 1950s to the 1980s, organizers said.
