Investigators determined Rowdy Dunnington, of Loranger, an unincorporated community in Tangipahoa Parish, was driving north on La. 1062 in a 2001 Mitsubishi Mirage when, for unknown reasons, he crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a southbound 2000 Toyota pickup driven by Jerry Schellhaas, 56, also of Loranger, Trooper 1st Class Nick Manale said in a news release. Schellhaas did try to take evasive action, but he could not react in time to avoid the crash, Manale said when reached by telephone. The Tangipahoa Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Dunnington, who was not wearing a seat belt, dead at the scene, Manale said. The Mitsubishi’s driver-side airbag previously had deployed and was not operable, Manale said. Schellhaas, who was using his seat belt, was not injured, Manale said. Troopers detected no alcohol in Schellhaas’ system, but submitted toxicology samples from Dunnington to the State Police Crime Lab for testing to determine if he was impaired at the time of the crash, Manale said.
