No significant injuries in Walker school bus wreck

WALKER — A dozen Livingston Parish students were taken to hospitals after a wreck involving three school buses Tuesday afternoon, officials said.
None of the injuries were believed to be serious, Jared Sandifer, a State Police spokesman, said.
About 130 students were aboard the buses when the accident occurred, said Delia Taylor, a spokeswoman for the Livingston Parish School Board.
The chain-reaction wreck occurred when the last of the buses in line struck the middle one, which was then knocked into the lead bus, Taylor said.
The impact pushed the lead bus into a vehicle in front of it, she said.
The incident occurred as the buses traveled south on Walker South Road near the intersection of Glenn Ellis Road, authorities said.
The students were on their way home from Walker High School, Walker Freshman High School and Westside Junior High School, Taylor said.
“There were no major injuries,” she said. “However, 12 students were transported to area hospitals,” most complaining about neck pain.
All of the students on the buses were checked by medical personnel at the scene, Taylor said.
“The rest of the students were then transported by other buses to the Walker Wal-Mart parking lot,” the spokeswoman said.
Administrators from the schools and the parish’s Central Office waited with the students at the parking lot.
School officials called all of the parents of the children involved and those students who weren’t injured were picked up by relatives, Taylor said.
Those students who were taken to hospitals will be released individually to the custody of their parents, but school administrators will check on them, she said.
One of the buses and the private vehicle were towed from the scene, but the other two buses were drivable.
The three buses won’t be returned to service until after they have been fully checked and determined to be safe, Taylor said.
