Women invited to self-defense class
“Be Aware,” a free self-defense seminar for women, will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Livingston Parish Literacy and Technology Center, 9261 Florida Blvd., in Walker.
Presented by senior nursing students from the Southeastern Louisiana University School of Nursing, the program will provide practical tips for women on remaining safe. The program is for women ages 16 and older.
Myia Erwin, senior nursing student from Zachary, and her fellow students selected the topic for their capstone project, a community outreach research course required of all senior nursing students at Southeastern. Nursing Professor Susan Pryor is serving as their faculty mentor on the project.
The seminar will include an overview on the prevalence of violence and attacks against women, resources available to assist women who might be victims of violence and a presentation of defensive techniques by a representative of the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office.
SLU library group to host wine benefit
Tickets are still available for the fourth annual “Wine with Friends” fundraiser for Southeastern Louisiana University’s Linus A. Sims Memorial Library.
The event is at 7 p.m. Nov. 2.
Hosted by the group Friends of Sims Library, the event will be at the library and will feature six wines paired with samplings of food from local restaurants, music and a silent auction, library director Eric Johnson said. Wines will be introduced by area wine experts.
FoSL is an organization that supports the activities and collections of the library. Funds generated by FoSL are used to supplement the library’s annual budget, purchase needed equipment and resources and provide programs, lectures, author readings, signings and other special events.
Tickets are $35. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., with the tasting beginning at 7 p.m. Space is limited, so reservations are requested. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Walker High band to host Family Night
The Walker High Band of Legacy will host Family Night from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 1 in Wildcat Stadium.
Admission is free.
Several trucks will be serving food in the school’s front parking lot and will donate 10 percent of their profits to the band, organizers said.
The New Orleans funk, rock and brass band Dysfunktional Bones, which is led by Walker High alumnus Justin Pardue, will provide music.
At 7 p.m., organizers will honor the senior band members and the night will end with special performances featuring the Walker High School cheerleaders, color guard, drum line and The Band of Legacy.
