Christian athletes plan event

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Southeast Louisiana District, will present the Summer Variety Show 2012 at 7 p.m. Saturday at Ponchatoula High School, 19452 La. 22 East.

The event will feature Christian and country music artists, the Country Village band; Kyle, Chris and Ron Smith; Jeremy and Jennifer Teague; Jonathan Adams; Perry Walton; Kim Ellzy Smith and Nick Smith; and American Idol finalist Lindsey Cardinale.

Tickets are $10, and proceeds will benefit the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, which serves athletes in Livingston, Tangipahoa and St. Helena parishes.

Athletic Hall of Fame

Denham Springs High School is selling tickets for the Denham Springs High School Athletic Hall of Fame induction banquet starting Wednesday at the school office, 1000 N. Range Ave.

The banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 30 at Forrest Grove Plantation, 8743 Stephenson Drive, Denham Springs. Tickets are $75. For more information, contact Laura Wingate at (225) 665-8851.

The public is encouraged to buy tickets early. Proceeds will be used to defray banquet costs and to support Denham Springs High School athletics.

The banquet will honor 14 former Yellow Jacket sports.

The Class of 2012 Hall of Fame will be introduced to the public Aug. 31 during halftime of the Denham Springs High School and Broadmoor football game at Jacket Stadium.

Assess the Need

Livingston Parish Assessor Jeff Taylor, in conjunction with several business donors and community volunteers, will sponsor the 12th consecutive Assess the Need Campaign this summer in an effort to provide school supplies for needy children in Livingston Parish Public Schools for the 2012-2013 school year.

Individual donations are needed and will be collected at participating business locations, he said.

For the first time, volunteers will be located at Wal-Mart stores in Denham Springs, Walker and Watson from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and Aug. 11 and Aug. 12, collecting donations and donated supplies for the campaign.

Taylor said volunteers will work with school principals to get the supplies to youth before the start of school on Aug. 9. Persons needing help should contact their principals or school counselors, Taylor said.

Vietnam exhibit

“Vietnam Heroes” will be on display from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Old City Hall building, 115 Mattie St., Denham Springs. The exhibit is a collection of memorabilia from the Vietnam War era, and will be on display until Nov. 11, organizers said. The exhibit is free and open to the public. Aladdin

The Spotlight Theater Players will present Aladdin from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Wholly Ground Coffee Shop, 27988 Walker South Road, Walker.
