Former Gov. Edwin Edwards remained hospitalized with pneumonia Sunday.

He was moved from intensive care to a regular hospital room late Sunday evening, his wife, Trina Edwards, said by email.

Earlier in the day, she said that she expected him to return to their home in Gonzales possibly Monday or Tuesday.

“He’s tired, but doing well overall. With a little rest he should be as good as new,” she wrote.

Edwards, 84, was taken by ambulance Saturday to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center.

His wife’s Facebook page was inundated with well-wishes as news of the former governor’s hospitalization reached the public.

“Thank you all so much for the prayers, comments, concerns, and support. I can’t possibly answer all of the messages (I’ve) received in the last several hours, but please know that I appreciate them all! Edwin is in good spirits as always and … so no worries!” Trina Edwards posted in response.

January has been a busy month for the former governor.

He moved into a new house, attended Gov. Bobby Jindal’s inaugural ball and went to the college football’s Bowl Championship Series game. Just two weeks ago, Edwards eulogized former state Senate President Sammy Nunez.

Last year, Edwards completed six months of home detention and regular reporting to a Baton Rouge halfway house. He served nearly 10 years in prison for his role in a bribery and extortion scheme to rig riverboat casino licenses during his fourth term as governor.

He met then-Trina Grimes Scott when she wrote him in prison and asked to visit him after reading his authorized biography.

They married in the summer, shortly before Edwards celebrated his 84th birthday at the Monteleone Hotel in New Orleans. They live in Gonzales with Trina Edwards’ two sons.

Edwin Edwards recently said he is enjoying private life after decades in the political spotlight. He served four terms as governor after launching his political career with the Crowley City Council.
