Running for Office: Metro Council Dist. 2
Steven Cook, a Democrat, is running for the District 2 Metro Council seat left open by outgoing councilman Ulysses “Bones” Addison.
District 2 is the north Baton Rouge district that encompasses Scotlandville and parts of Baker.
Cook, 32, is an organizer for Stand for Children, an advocacy group that works with parents and schools to educational reforms.
Cook was born and reared in District 2 and said he is “well aware of the community’s needs.”
“So many leaders have come to our community promising to turn things around,” he said. “They have been consistently giving us hope. In my 32 years of living, hope has never solved any of my problems.”
Cook said that, as councilman, he will bring his constituents access to career opportunities and services.
“I don’t own a crystal ball, so I won’t know until Nov. 6 if the community as a whole believes in me and my leadership ability,” Cook said. “But I believe in them and will continue this work with or without an office.”
Cook is the father of two daughters ages 9 and 11, and is pursuing his degree in international trade and finance at LSU. He said he expects to graduate next fall.
