Parents of the 750 children at Claiborne Elementary in Baton Rouge have until Friday to complete an application with the East Baton Rouge Parish school system to transfer to one of 33 higher-performing elementary schools.
Claiborne is not the only school to earn an F grade in Baton Rouge this year. But because of a mix of academic improvement, school restructuring and exemptions from federal school choice rules, Claiborne is the only Baton Rouge school this year that has to participate in the program. Last year, 14 schools in the parish school system had to offer such choice.
Claiborne parents can apply in person at the Instructional Resource Center, 1022 S. Foster Drive, or through the mail. The in-person deadline is 4:30 p.m. Friday and mailed applications need to be postmarked by noon Friday.
By Aug. 30, the school system will inform transfer-seeking Claiborne parents of where their children are transferring to. Parents have until Sept. 13 to complete the process and transfer to their new school.
Last year, 834 students in Baton Rouge applied for transfers and 385 ended up actually transferring, less than 1 percent of those eligible.
