The Louisiana Association of Educators is hosting gatherings statewide on Saturday to promote reading, officials said Friday.
The get-togethers, called Read Across Louisiana, are being held to coincide with the birthday of Dr. Seuss, the children’s author whose name is Theodor Seuss Geisel.
He was born on March 2, 1904, and died in 1991.
One of Saturday’s sessions is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Mall of Louisiana.
Others are set at the same time for Lafayette at the South Regional Library, 6101 Johnston St. and the North Regional Library, 5101 North University Ave. in Carencro.
Gatherings are also scheduled for the Alexandria, Monroe and Shreveport areas.
The LAE said in a prepared statement that the celebrations will include local celebrities reading alongside children of all ages.
State and local volunteers will host a wide array of educational activities, book giveaways and other prizes.
Read Across America is a spinoff of the National Education Association’s Read Across America.
The LAE is an affiliate of the NEA.
The sessions are free and open to the public.
