Schools launch fitness campaign Schools launch fitness campaign Advocate staff report Nov. 11, 2012 Comments Four East Baton Rouge Parish schools will participate in a pilot program to get more students physically fit and combat childhood obesity, according to a news release from Mayor-President Kip Holden’s office. Baton Rouge Foreign Language Immersion Magnet, Buchanan, Winbourne and Ryan elementary schools will kick off new fitness programs Wednesday as pilot schools for Project Fit America in Louisiana. The program will bring both physical education equipment and training to students and teachers. It is part of the Fresh Beginnings Grant received by the Mayor’s Healthy City Initiative from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation and its Challenge for a Healthier Louisiana. Dignitaries will be joining the initiative to celebrate the students throughout the day, including school Superintendent Bernard Taylor; LSU baseball coach Paul Mainieri; Christy Reeves, president of BCBSLAF; Rudy Macklin, executive director of the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness; and Michael Comeaux, Louisiana Department of Education health and physical education coordinator.
