Convocation to begin new EBR school year

Teachers in East Baton Rouge Parish public schools return to work on Tuesday with a districtwide convocation to be presided over by Superintendent Bernard Taylor, according to news release.

All teachers, principals and administrators will go to their specific schools and will take school buses to and from the event, which will occur from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday.

The convocation will “celebrate successes and growth in the school system, talk about improvements in student achievement, drive excitement for the coming school year and showcase student and staff talent,” the news release says.

There will be various performances, but the first speaker, Southern University Chancellor James Llorens, will not start speaking until 8:45 a.m.

Taylor will finish the convocation with an address that starts at 10 a.m.

East Baton Rouge Parish students return Wednesday for the start of the 2012-13 school year.

Not back to this foolishness? Getting prepared for the students' arrival tomorrow is much more beneficial than this show. At least they are not meeting at a church site.

a waste of time and money. that fits right in with everything else our failing school system will accomplish. what's the gambling line on whether EBRSS will make any real progress this year? you have a better chance buying a powerball ticket.

Trust me, teachers feel this is a total waste of time also. ...and money, since they are required to board buses to take them out to Southern. The new superintendent is already making a heck of an impression.

A waste of time on the eve of school's first day as the state embarks upon significant changes in education. Teachers should be at school preparing. Not at a pep rally to make the so-called leadership look good. Teachers should be embarrassed. How first- grade is this?

This is a waste of time and money. Teachers would rather be at their home school getting ready their classrooms ready for the first day of school. Not looking at the Superintendent prance around and showcase the other men in pink.
