Area winners have been named from among more than 20,000 youth across Louisiana who participated in the state’s fourth annual Lemonade Day in May.
The free community program is designed to encourage entrepreneurship among Louisiana’s youth by supporting them in establishing and operating their own lemonade businesses. Participants received a free backpack containing materials for operating their lemonade stand. Much of the proceeds from the stands are donated to charity.
Winners from each market in south Louisiana, their profit and the charity receiving donations are:
BATON ROUGE: Best Overall to Ethan and Evan Curtis & Mae Stand, Baton Rouge, $303, Youth Oasis; Best Business Plan to Anna Dodd, Baton Rouge, $258, Trafficking Hope; Top Producer to Reese and Demond Thomas, Baton Rouge, $378.54, Baton Rouge Sickle Cell Foundation.
LAFAYETTE/LAKE CHARLES/SOUTHWEST LOUISIANA: Best Overall to Ahmed El Gamel, Lafayette, $89, donated lemonade to kids who did not have money to purchase it; Best Business Plan to Ashlyn Lee, Sulphur, $250, Bart Lower Medical Bills Fund; and Top Producer to Rhianna Campbell, Lafayette, $230, Colors for a Cause.
GREATER NEW ORLEANS REGION: Best Overall to Maya Major, New Orleans, $458, Unity of Greater NOLA; Best Business Plan to Tyrin Wiltz, Westwego, $109, Girl Scout Cadette Troop for Women of Domestic Violence; and Top Producer to Farin Smith - Group’s Mentor, New Orleans, $1,250, Steve Harvey’s Mentorship Foundation.
HOUMA/THIBODAUX/BAYOU AREA: Best Overall to Scott Christoffersen, Houma, $30, TARC; Best Business Plan to Presley LeCompte, Chauvin, $67, St. Jude’s Hospital; and Top Producer, Colin Alario, Lockport, $108.50, Children’s Hospital.
A separate Best Looking Lemonade Stand Facebook Contest drew 150 entries and was won by Alexis Covington of Walker, with 937 likes, followed by Anna Dodd of Baton Rouge, with 867 likes. Coming in third voted as a staff favorite was Scott Christopherson of Houma.
All winners will receive a gift basket from Raising Cane’s Chicken Fingers. Facebook winners receive merchandise from the New Orleans Saints.
Louisiana is one of more than 40 regions in the U.S. and Canada to participate in Lemonade Day. Lemonade Day Louisiana was founded in 2010 by entrepreneurs John Georges, of New Orleans, and Todd Graves, of Baton Rouge. Over the past four years, Lemonade Day has attracted more than 65,000 youth across Louisiana. Lemonade Day Louisiana 2015 is scheduled for May 2.
