Founder Terry Ancar designed and manufactured the NeoRay Portable Digital X-Ray System after recognizing a need in neonatal care units. Pre-term babies often can’t handle the high level of radiation in X-ray devices used on adults. The NeoRay is a compact system designed to be used in Neonatal Intensive Care Units at the incubator. The device was presented in the JEDCO Challenge pitch competition that included 44 applicants. PortaVision Medical won a prize worth almost $80,000 in cash and various business services. THE LOUISIANA TUMOR REGISTRY AT THE LSU HEALTH SCIENCES CENTER NEW ORLEANS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH RECEIVED A FIRST-PLACE AWARD FROM THE SURVEILLANCE EPIDEMIOLOGY AND END RESULTS PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH’S NATIONAL CANCER INSTITUTE FOR ITS DATA QUALITY PROFILE. This is the fifth time LSUHSC’s Louisiana Tumor Registry has earned the award and the fourth consecutive year. THE SEER PROGRAM EVALUATES A NUMBER OF MEASURES OF DATA QUALITY ANNUALLY. THE SEER PROGRAM COLLECTS CANCER INCIDENCE AND SURVIVAL DATA FROM 18 POPULATION-BASED CANCER REGISTRIES IN THE UNITED STATES. IT IS CONSIDERED TO BE THE STANDARD FOR QUALITY AMONG CANCER REGISTRIES AROUND THE WORLD. AROUND SOUTH LA. New Orleans craft distillery Atelier Vie LLC and Lacassine-based Louisiana Spirits Distillery LLC won top awards in the American Distilling Institute competition among American craft, or boutique, distilleries. Atelier won a gold medal in the category of “contemporary rectified gin” for its Euphrosine Gin No. 9. Louisiana Spirits won in the spiced rum category with its Spiced Bayou Rum. Three other Atelier Vie spirits also won medals: in the absinthe category, its Toulouse Green Absinthe tied with an Oregon distillery for first place and its Toulouse Red took second place; and in the clear whiskey category, its Riz Louisiana Rice Whiskey took third place. Both distilleries also recently won honors from the American Craft Distillers Association. Atelier Vie’s Euphrosine Gin No. 9 won a gold medal in that competition, and Louisiana Spirits Distillery won a gold medal for its Spiced Bayou Rum and a bronze medal for its Silver Bayou Rum. The American Heart Association cited various local companies for achieving Fit-Friendly status by creating physical activity programs within the workplace. Baton Rouge General Medical Center and Rubicon LLC earned the Worksite Innovation Award presented to worksites that creatively implement programs to promote physical activity in the workplace and/or community. Platinum Award status went to Albemarle Corp.; Baton Rouge General Medical Center; Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana; Lane Regional Medical Center; Louisiana CAT; Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center; and Rubicon LLC.
