IBM groundbreaking set for Sept. 26 IBM groundbreaking set for Sept. 26 Startups, giants share spotlight Advocate staff report Sept. 24, 2013 Comments The groundbreaking for the IBM Service Center will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 in downtown Baton Rouge. The ceremonial event actually will be held at the Hilton Baton Rouge Capitol Center on Lafayette Street, a few blocks down the street from where the IBM office will be built. The groundbreaking was moved to the Capitol Center to accommodate the expected turnout, and in case of bad weather, said Lauren Hatcher, a spokeswoman for the Baton Rouge Area Chamber. IBM is set to open its offices in Baton Rouge in spring 2015. About 800 people are expected to work in the building, which will be on the former site of The Advocate on Lafayette, bordered by North and Main streets. An 11-story residential tower, with 95 apartments and nine luxury town homes, also will be part of the development. The residential units will be completed by summer or fall 2015. The Lemoine Co. will serve as contractor for the $55 million project.
