Louisiana Nursery closing Florida Boulevard store

Louisiana Nursery will close its Florida Boulevard store by around Labor Day, citing steadily declining sales at that location.

Mitch Mayes, the company’s owner and president, said the store at 12289 Florida Blvd. is only about five miles from Louisiana Nursery’s Coursey Boulevard store and has seen declining sales for the past two decades.

“The business at that store in the last 20 years just went to a point where we just don’t make money,” he said.

Mayes said the company, which also has stores on Perkins Road and in Prairieville, tends to pull from a roughly five-mile radius.

The Florida store was built in 1968 and Louisiana Nursery bought it in 1984.

The company is running a sale at the Florida store through the end of August with the goal of selling the inventory there “down to the bone.”

Mayes said the “core” of the store’s employees will be moved to other locations, but said some, mostly seasonal employees, will have to be let go. He said the core group makes up about three quarters of the staff at Florida, but would not provide any specific numbers.

Mayes said business at the other locations has begun to pick up after a couple years of soft sales. Sales peaked in 2010 and early 2011 before slackening, but May was up 15 percent over last year and the June numbers are keeping up the trend.

“There are definitely consistent signs that demand is going up for lawn and garden,” he said.
