Globalstar debuts satellite phone in stores Globalstar debuts satellite phone in stores Advocate business staff report May 23, 2013 Comments Globalstar, the Covington-based satellite phone company, has introduced the first satellite phone that can be purchased at retail stores such as Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s and West Marine. The SPOT Global Phone retails for $499, and there’s a required subscription service that starts at $24.99 a month. The phone is aimed at hunters, hikers, boaters and other outdoor enthusiasts, whose activities take them out of the range of cellphone service. Earlier this year, Globalstar launched the final six satellites for its second-generation communications network. The satellites are currently being shifted into place and the network should be completed by August. But Jay Monroe, Globalstar CEO, said by the end of May the network should “feel 100 percent functional to users.” Editor’s note: This story was changed May 17, 2013, to correct the list of retailers selling the phone.
