The change will put about 200 employees in the Florida Boulevard development in a move the insurer said is about using office space more efficiently. State Farm spokesman Gary Stephenson said the new space is about 60 percent of what it currently leases at Towne Center, though he could not disclose square footage. The company informed employees of the move a couple of weeks ago. State Farm will move into the main building at Bon Carré. “This is about being more efficient with our workspace and being located in a building that is better suited for the number of employees we have there in Baton Rouge,” Stephenson said, noting the Towne Center space is simply under-utilized today. Stephenson said State Farm has been in Towne Center since August 2006, but the company has been able to do more with less because of advancements in technology. For example, in January, State Farm sold a claims office on O’Neal Lane for $1 million. That office used to have 50 people working out of it, but only had about 10 when it was sold. “Obviously, gaining efficiency in work space translates to a better value to our customers,” he said. In addition to the roughly 200 people at its main operations center, State Farm has a small number of field employees who come into the office only periodically for meetings, Stephenson said. Bon Carré Business Center is home to the Louisiana Technology Park and Cox Communications’ Baton Rouge office. Michael Rayburn, director of leasing for Bon Carré, could not be reached for comment.
