Wampold buys land on Hilton Avenue

Developer Mike Wampold has purchased a 2.5 acre tract on Hilton Avenue for $1.35 million and plans to build a hotel and restaurant on the property.

Wampold’s company bought the land from Port Gardner LLC in a transaction that closed Wednesday. The vacant lot is across from the Baton Rouge Marriott and goes all the way to Bankers Avenue.

“We’re talking to potential restaurant folks right now,” Wampold says. “We’re trying to do a combination of an upscale restaurant and a hotel.”

Private money and private property, so I say best of luck. If it changes to public money for a public-private venture or TIF, then I would say I do not support it.

I'm honestly not being snarky, but how has BR not reached the saturation point on hotels?
